Egypt's Farghali Abdel-Hafiz holds solo exhibition in Dubai Artist Farghali Abdel-Hafiz exhibits a collection of paintings entitled ‘Past and Present Encounter' this month at Dubai's Lawrie Shabibi gallery
In what will be his first solo exhibition in the Gulf, Farghali Abdel-Hafiz (1941) exhibits a series of highly textured canvases, adorned with layers of thick colour and fine detail that carry a nostalgic air yet raise questions about Egypt's politically tumultuous present. In ‘Past and Present Encounter', Abdel Hafiz reacts to Egypt's current state of political turmoil. His paintings bear black and white photographs that seem to glorify a better past, intertwined with boldly coloured figures and symbols. Abdel-Hafiz's work is dynamic and at times overpowering; he creates icons derived from Egyptian culture and exotic figures that sprawl across large canvases. His work lends itself to Egyptian folk art, as he applies raw colour and other media including sand, mud, and clay to create expressive paintings. Abdel-Hafiz studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence, and his artwork has been exhibited across Europe and the USA, and featured in internationalbiennials, including Sao Paolo, Venice, and China. His Dubai debut at the Lawrie Shabibi gallery, which opened on 14 January, is organised in collaboration with the Zamalek Art Gallery, Cairo. Programme: The exhibition runs until 3 March at the Lawrie Shabibi gallery Unit 21, Alserkal Avenue, Al-Quoz, Dubai, UAE http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/62595.aspx
