Ultras Ahlawy march in Cairo as tensions mount in Port Said saga Hardcore Ahly fans march from the club's headquarters to the Journalists' Syndicate to hold a news conference over the Port Said case
Around two thousand hardcore Ahly supporters marched through Cairo on Tuesday to hold a news conference at the Journalists' Syndicate, where they vowed to reveal "secrets" regarding February's infamous Port Said disaster. The members of Ahly's ardent fan group, the Ultras Ahlawy, marched from the club's headquarters in the Al-Gizeera district to the Journalists Syndicate in downtown Cairo, leading to traffic congestion along the vital 6 October Bridge. The Ahly fans are angry over what they perceive as the authorities' reluctance to punish the culprits of Egypt's worst-ever football tragedy, which left dozens dead and hundreds injured last February. They incurred the wrath of Ahly's board of directors after storming the stadium during a team training session on Thursday, forcing coach Hossam El-Badry to cancel the training. The board condemned the behaviour of the fans in a strongly-worded statement, saying they had taken sufficient measures to preserve the rights of the victims' families. However, their cause was not helped by the families' decision to skip a meeting with the board members on Sunday, in which the club was scheduled to inform them of the steps they had taken in the case. A number of security officials and Masry fans are being tried for charges of negligence and premeditated murder respectively.
