Culture events: Picks for the weekend Ahram Online recommends this weekend's top culture events (5-8 July), including the arrival of American Idol finalists to Cairo and a celebration of Nubian culture hosted by El-Fan Midan
Thursday 5 July Celebrating Independence Day at Schutz American School in Alexandria at 7pm A music concert in honour of Independence Day will be held at 7pm. TheAmerican Centre Alexandria(ACA) event is open to the public. The concert will feature the US Air Forces Central (AFCENT) Brass Band. 51 Schutz Street, Raml, Alexandria Classical guitar at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm Guitarist Emad Hamdy will give a concert, including many well known tunes. The concert will feature a number of other musicians, including percussionists, vocalists and dancers, as well as a group of young Egyptian guitarists. Cairo Opera House, Small Hall, Zamalek Last Day of Summer exhibition at Safarkhan Gallery The show features modern Egyptian art from the 20thcentury, including works by Effat Naghi and Kamal Khalifa, alongside contemporary pieces. Brazil Street, Zamalek, Cairo Friday 6 July American Idol finalists at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm American Idol finalists are coming to Egypt to perform a singing concert with Ghanny Ya Masreya singers. The concert will be a rare opportunity to get to know the finalists of one of the best known singing competitions in the world. Open Air Theatre at the Cairo Opera House, Zamalek Sahara Band at El-Geneina Theatre at 8.30pm Egyptian Rai music group, Sahara, includes vocalists Mohamed Baioumy, Ahmed El-Wahsh and Mohamed Medhat, guitarist Marwan Shaaban and bass and drummers Ahmed Hesham and Osama Salah. The diverse backgrounds of the musiciansallows them to add a variety of personal and musical preferences to their music. Al-Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Darassa, Cairo Saturday 7 July El-Fan Midan in Abdeen Square El-Fan Midan's July edition coincides with International Day for Nubia, so the crew will celebrate Nubian culture. The event will feature different music groups, film screenings, dance performances and various art galleries throughout the day. Nesma Abdel Aziz, a young Marimba player, has a long history of performances in Egypt and internationally, captivating her audience with musical skills and energy. Among many songs, the audience will hear covers of Jesse Cook. River Hall, 26th of July Street, Cairo Gallery Collection at Al-Masar Al-Masar Gallery celebrates its fourth anniversary with a summer show, Gallery Collection, featuring artwork exhibited on the gallery's walls since it's opening in 2008. The gallery has hosted paintings by well-known art icons of the 20th century, such as Omar El-Nagdy and Taha Hussein. Opening of the "Pick 5" exhibition at the Townhouse Gallery at 7pm Six artists who are current students or recent graduates of Cairo-based universities will come together in the First Floor Gallery for "Pick 5", the Townhouse Gallery's semi-annual survey of emerging artists.The exhibition will open at 7pm and will run until 1 August. First Floor, Hussein El-Meamar Pasha Street, Cairo Fayrouz Karawya at El-Sawy Culturewheel at 8pm Born in the Egyptian coastal city of Port Said, Fayrouz Karawya, an artist, singer, writer and researcher will set Arabic poetry to music. Sound of Sakia, presents Karawya as an artist who touches on "different musical experiences" that suit the subjects of her songs "and express and underline their dramatic dimensions." More info here 26th of July Street, Cairo Popular classics at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina at 8pm As part of the Summer Festival 2012, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) Orchestra conducted by Mohamed Saad Basha will perform popular classics from known musicals such as The Phantom of The Opera, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, and Beauty and The Beast.
