Thursday 24 May Egyptian Contemporary Music Ensemble at Prince Taz Palace at 8 pm As part of the Contemporary Music Days, Therry Pecou and the Egyptian Contemporary Music Ensemble will perform Quatuor pour la fin du temps (1941) by Olivier Messiaen (1918-1992) 27 Al-Syoufiya Street, Al-Khalifa, Cairo Arabic National Music Ensemble at the Cairo Opera House at 8 pm The Arabic National Music Ensemble conducted by Selim Sehab will perform gems of Arabic music, with the Syrian singer Waad Al Bahri as guest performer Cairo Opera House Main Hall, Zamalek "Memories of the Body" exhibition by Marwa Adel at the French Cultural Institute at 7 pm Marwa Adel, artist and photographer, presents her work exploring the human body and asking questions such as: Why are we afraid of our bodies? What is the relationship between our body and our soul? The exhibition runs till June 20. Madrasset Al-Huquq Al-Frinseya Street, Mounira, Cairo Friday 25 May “In the Mood for Love” screening at Sufi Bookstore at 7 pm Set in Hong Kong in 1962 and dealing with an affair between two married people living in the same building, this is a love story that audiences have enjoyed for years. Written and directed by Kar Wai Wong. 12 Sayed El-Bakry Street, Zamalek, Cairo Progressive jazz improvisations at El Sawy Culturewheel at 8 pm As part of the Contemporary Music Days, a group called Aliquid, consisting of Jean-Marc Foussat and Sylvain Guérineau from France, will invite the audience to improvisations on progressive jazz. More info here 26th of July street, Zamalek “Elections” group exhibition in Darb1718 Whether the artists are idealists, activists, reformists or anything else, the monumental moment of the elections touches people in a way that brings about intense creativity. Darb1718 hosts this group exhibition portraying just that. Hind Samir,Ahmed Sabry,Hani Rashed,Sabah Naeem,Marwa Adel,Ali Abdel Mohsen,Ahmed el Shaer,Atef Ahmed,Amira Parree,Hala Abu Shady,Neven Emam are all on show. (Open from 4pm-10pm) Qasr Al-Shamee Street, behind the Hanging Church and Amr Mosque, Old Cairo. Saturday 26 May Meetphool: Mime, Clown and Street Performance at Vinnoise Palace at 6 pm Meetphool is an online platform pooling all forms of art. In this event they bring together artists from all over Egypt to perform live painting, mime, music, theatre, dance and story-telling along with art groups such as Mashrou' El Mareekh, the Oyoon Art Group, Mahatat and others. Read more here. 11 Mahmoud Bassiouny Street, Downtown, Cairo Nagham Masry Band in El Sawy Culturewheel at 8 pm The band will play their contemporary music inspired by Egyptian cultural and political life, with their lyrics based on poems by Egyptian vernacular poets such as Salah Jahine and Ahmed Fouad Negm River Hall, 26 July Street, Zamalek Symphonic Concert at the Cairo Opera House at 8 pm The Cairo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ahmed El Saedi will perform Debussy's Nocturnes and Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra, as well as Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor. The soloist of the evening is Mohamed Hamdy; choir master: Maya Gvineria Cairo Opera House Main Hall, Zamalek, Cairo Salalem Band in El-Geneina Theatre at 8.30 pm Presenting themselves as an Egyptian mix of indie pop and funk rock, the six members of the pop band came together in 2004. Their Arabic lyrics speak to young people today. Salalem continue to create songs that are excitedly welcomed by their audience. Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Cairo Sunday 27 May “Spirited Away” animation film screening at Karmet Ibn Hani at 6.30 pm This 2001 Japanese animation revolves around a 10 year old girl with a wild imagination who wanders into a world ruled gods, witches, and monsters. Karmet Ibn Hani Cultural Centre, Ahmed Shawky Museum, 6 Ahmed Shawki Street, Courniche El Nil, Giza “Gallery Collection” exhibition at Al Masar Gallery The exhibition showcases a fine selection from exhibitions the gallery has held over the past four years, including works by the stars of 20th-century Egyptian modern art, pioneers of the third, fourth and fifth generations, and the young artists of today. On display will be works by Adel El-Siwi, Ahmed Fouad Selim, Essam Marouf, Georges Bahgory, Hamdi Attia, Ibrahim El-Dessouki, Mahmoud Abdullah, Sami Aboul Azm, Sami Abdul Azm, Kareem El-Qurity, Leila Ezzet, Omar El-Nagdy and others.
