Olympics: Egypt records its biggest medal haul in history
Published in Ahram Online on 07 - 08 - 2021

Egypt has recorded its biggest medal haul at a single Olympic Games after karateka Feryal Abdelaziz gave the country its sixth medal on Saturday.
Abdelaziz became the first Egyptian female Olympian to win gold after beating Azerbaijan's Irina Zaretska 2-0 in the final of the kumite +61kg category, completing a remarkable sweep for the country's athletes in Tokyo.
She also gave Egypt its first gold since the 2004 Athens Games when wrestler Karam Gaber triumphed in the men's Greco-Roman 96kg category.
Abdelaziz's victory on the Olympic debut of karate marks Egypt's eighth gold in history.
The country also bettered its five-medal haul in 1936, 1948 and 2004.
However, the 1948 London Games is the most remarkable, given that Egypt had won two gold medals at the time.
Egypt's medal haul in Tokyo:
Feryal Abdelaziz: Karate (women's kumite +61 kg), gold medal
Ahmed Elgendy: Modern Pentathlon (men), silver medal
Hedaya Malak: Taekwondo (women's 67kg), bronze medal
Seif Eissa: Taekwondo (men's 80 kg), bronze medal
Giana Farouk: Karate (women's kumite 61kg), bronze medal
Mohamed 'Kesho' El-Sayed: Greco-Roman wrestling (men's 67kg), bronze medal
