Sherif brilliance propels Egypt's Ahly to 7th African Super Cup
Published in Ahram Online on 28 - 05 - 2021

A brilliant goal from in-form striker Mohamed Sherif set Ahly on their way to a 2-0 victory over Morocco's RS Berkane that gave them a record-extending seventh African Super Cup in Qatari capital Doha on Friday.
After a lethargic first half in which Confederation Cup holders Berkane had the upper hand with two goal-scoring chances, Sherif broke the deadlock on 57 minutes with an unstoppable shot on the turn.
From then on, Ahly displayed a fine attacking football amid little resistance from a dispirited Berkane side and substitute Salah Mohsen, who replaced ineffective winger Hussein El-Shahat, wrapped up the win with a late strike.
Ahly added a fourth title to an impressive haul of trophies as they won a remarkable treble last season, giving South African coach Pitso Mosimane his third triumph at the helm as well.
Their first African Super Cup win since 2014 gives Ahly a boost ahead of a mouthwatering two-legged clash against Tunisia's Esperance in the African Champions League semis next month.
Inefficient strategy
In the first half, Berkane's central defensive pair Issoufou Dayo and Ismail Mokadem easily dealt with Ahly's innocuous long balls, with the Red Devils keeping faith with that strategy even though it was inefficient.
Berkane could have gone ahead on a couple of occasions as Ahly appeared disjointed.
In the 27th minute, Mohamed Farhane broke clear after a neat threaded pass from veteran forward Mouhssine Iajour but hit the side netting with the goal at his mercy.
Skipper Mohamed Aziz also went close on the stroke of halftime when he sent a free diving header just wide after a free-kick was whipped into the area by full-back Omar Namsaoui.
Sherif's beauty made all the difference though as Ahly assumed control afterwards.
The 25-year-old collected a pass from Hussein El-Shahat with his back to defender Ismail Mokadem, spun around him and planted a sublime curler into the far corner.
Mohsen ended the match as a contest with eight minutes remaining when he raced clear after a deft through ball from Taher Mohamed Taher to round the keeper and slot into an empty net.
Both sides had further chances to score in stoppage time but Ahly eventually emerged as the worthy winners.
