Ahly beat AS Vita Club, edge closer to Champions League quarter
Published in Ahram Online on 16 - 03 - 2021

Egyptian giants Ahly smashed AS Vita Club 3-0 on Tuesday, first-ever win for an Egyptian Club in DR Congo, taking them a step closer to the African Champions League quarter finals.
Mohamed Sherif and Mohamed "Afsha" Magdi scored on quick fire succession 19 minutes in while, second-half substitute Taher Mohamed Taher completed the route in the 78th minute, collecting three precious points and taking Ahly to the second spot of Group A with seven points, three behind leaders Simba of Tanzania.
Playing at an unusual time, in daylight and during relatively hot weather, Coach Pitso Mosimane opted for an offensive approach lining up to his previous statements that they have no other options than to claim a victory.
Sherif capitalised on Ahly's early pressing as he latched onto a long ball from Marwan Mohsen to tap at the far post after just six minutes.
Mohsen could have doubled the lead two minutes later when he went clear on target but his poor effort went easily in the hands of the keeper meanwhile, Afsha had a clear attempt on goal that went over the bar.
Afsha made amends for that early miss when he skipped past his marker to send a low shot that hit the far post and into the goal making it 2-0 in the 19th minute.
Ahly created a constant threat to the hosts vulnerable defence but lacked the final touch.
After the interval, Ahly seemed more cautious about protecting their ground. AS Vita pressed forward in an attempt to bounce back in the game and their attempts crashed twice on the post.
Taher Mohamed scored the third goal - from point blank - after being set up by Walter Bwalya.
With two games remaining, Simba are at the top of Group A with 10 points, after beating Merrikh of Sudan 3-0 on Tuesday. They are ahead of Ahly (seven points), AS Vita Club (four points) and bottom side Merrikh who haven't collected any points yet.
