New coach hopes Gyan, Boateng will return to Ghana's fold
Ghana's new coach Kwesi Appiah calls on key duo Gyan and Boateng to reconsider their decision to abandon the national team

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah said on Tuesday he hops Gyan Asamoah and Kevin-Prince Boateng will return to the Black Stars' fold after they quit international football.
Gyan, who is on loan at United Arab Emirates side Al-Ain from English Premier League club Sunderland, said he was psychologically shattered after coming in for fierce criticism following Ghana's failure to win the African Cup of Nations.
He had a penalty saved during Ghana's loss to eventual winners Zambia in the Nations Cup semi final.
AC Milan midfielder Boateng retired from international football in November last year to concentrate on his club career.
“I have spoken to Asamoah Gyan on two occasions hoping that he will come back. No one can doubt his quality,” Appiah told the Ghana Football Association official website after being formally unveiled as the team's new boss on Tuesday.
“He is a very good player who will be a good addition to our plans if he is available to us. But it's up to him to make that decision.
“We will always try to use the best players available. But like I said, the decision will rest with Kevin (Boateng) and if chooses to rescind his decision to make a return, we will be happy,” Appiah added.
Appiah, who has been the team's assistant coach since 2008, took over at Ghana following the sacking of Serbian boss Goran Stevanovic.
His first task will be leading Ghana in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in June.
“Competition for places in the Black Stars will be on merit and not automatic,” Kwesi said.
“I want two or three players for every position. We will not want to rely on just one player for any position in the team.”
