Ayman Nour presents candidacy papers after military council pardon Presidential hopeful Ayman Nour kicks off his electoral campaign after the military council quashes criminal record
Egyptian politician Ayman Nour has officially presented his candidacy papers to the Higher Presidential Elections Commission (HPEC) after being given a pardon by the military council Wednesday. Nour, who heads the liberal El-Ghad Thawra Party, had been banned from politics since being convicted of forging signatures to secure the formation of the liberal Al-Ghad Party in 2005. In 2011 he made an attempt to overturn the conviction but failed. Egyptian law bans any candidates with a criminal record from running for president. Nour announced that he will hold a press conference Thursday morning to outline his electoral campaign. Nour previously ran for the presidency against ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2005, coming in second place. To run now, Nour requires either 30,000 recommendations from 15 different governorates, the recommendations of 30 MPs, or to be registered as a party candidate before 8 April.
