FJP 'ready to replace' resigned constituent assembly members Muslim Brotherhood's FJP doesn't see problem replacing 8 resigned members of Egypt's constituent assembly, tasked with drafting a new constitution
Freedom and Justice Party spokesman Ahmed Sobei said on Sunday that all political factions that had recently met with the party to discuss the constituent assembly – tasked with drafting a new constitution – had reached agreement with the party to replace eight resigned assembly members with alternate members. "Our list of alternates includes a host of personalities capable of replacing the resigned members," Sobei told Ahram Online. According to the rules, if a member pulls out from the constituent assembly, he is replaced by another from the alternates list of 20 members. Ten FJP members are on top of this list. In case the number of resignations exceeds that of the alternates list, the FJP "will discuss with the other political factions ways to handle this situation," he added. Eight members of Egypt's recently-formed constituent assembly threatened to resign on Sunday to protest what they see as the unfair distribution of assembly seats to those of Islamist orientations.
