Egypt's first librarians' union to launch Thursday Event to be organised by Coalition of Egyptian Librarians, Egyptian Library and Archives, and March 7 movement, among others
An event devoted to the establishment of Egypt's first official librarians' union will take place on Thursday, 19 January, at the Egyptian Library and Archives premises. Kicking off at 11am, the event is being organised by the Coalition of Egyptian Librarians (CEL), the Egyptian Library and Archives and the March 7 movement, among others. The event will be attended by Egyptian Minister of Culture Shaker Abdel-Hamid and former culture minister Emad Abou-Ghazi. The union will strive to ensure that individuals working in the library field receive social benefits like their counterparts in other fields. Led mainly by the CEL, committees have been established in governorates throughout Egypt to collect signatures in support of the new union. The union will include librarians currently employed by high schools, universities and public libraries, along with those employed by Egypt's General Organisation for Cultural Palaces. Given the limited number of invitations, the event will be broadcast live via online streaming video. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/32080.aspx
