Egypt's Minister of Communication and Information Technology Amr Talaat has said that Egypt is the second largest county in the world with an underwater communications network linking the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe, which makes it capable of playing a powerful role in the international field of communications. Talaat made the comments on Thursday at the American Chamber of Commerce Conference in Egypt, which started on Monday and is concluding on Thursday. Over 100 senior executives from almost 50 leading American companies are part of a mission that arrived in Egypt on Monday to "underscore the continued commitment and unwavering support of the American business community to Egypt's long-term stability and economic development; as well as to explore prospective business opportunities," according to the AmCham. The delegation, which met with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Monday, included senior representatives from the United States Trade Development Agency (USTDA), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im), as well as multilateral financial institutions. The minister also said during the conference that Egypt excels in the call centre services industry, which employs qualified workers proficient in several languages. Talaat also noted that the communications sector currently contributes up to 5 percent of the country's GDP, compared to 1.5 percent in previous years.
