The Aswan International Women's Film Festival (AIWFF) has selected the award winning Egyptian movie Withered Green (Akhdar Yabes) to represent Egypt in the feature-length film competition. AIWFF runs from 20 to 27 February this year in Aswan. Withered Green, directed by Mohamed Hammad, is an Egyptian-French production. It centers on the traditional and conservative Iman, who must assume the care of her younger sister Noha after the death of their parents. When Noha receives a marriage proposal, Iman must ask their uncles to meet the groom and his family, as per the custom of Arab societies. But when Iman makes a shocking discovery, she decides to do away with tradition. Withered Green is Hammad's first feature film. It had its MENA premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival where it won Hammad the Best Director Muhr award. The film first screened at Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur, which ran from 30 September to 6 October 2016. It also screened at the Locarno Film Festival in August, and at festivals in Singapore, Brussels, and Stockholm. According to Al-Ahram Arabic website, festival director Hassan Abo El-Ela said the film was selected for its cinematic quality and its subject matter, which suited the festival's theme. After the film's screening, a discussion will be held with the film's director and members of the cast and crew. According to Abo El-Ela, the film may be screened separately at the Fawzy Fawzy Youssef open-air theatre in Aswan, which has a capacity of 1000 seats, as well as alongside the other films in the festival.
