Egypt releases activist arrested over islands protests Sherif Al-Rouby was released pending investigations into accusations including 'inciting protests'
Egyptian authorities allowed an activist from the April 6 Youth Movement, Sherif Al- Rouby, to walk free late on Tuesday, days after a court ordered his release pending investigations on charges including “inciting protests,” his lawyer has said. Al-Rouby was arrested last month along with dozens of other protesters during demonstrations against the Egyptian government's decision to transfer the two Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia. A Cairo criminal court ordered his release last week on EGP 1,000 bail pending a probe into charges including “inciting protests” and belonging to a terrorist group, in reference to the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood. But he remained in custody until he was released late on Tuesday. “Al-Rouby was released from a Giza police station after having paid the LE 1000 bail,” lawyer Sameh Samir told Aswat Masriya news website. Ahmed Maher and Mohamed Adel, thefounders of the April 6 Youth movement which helped ignite the 2011 popular uprising, along with the group's coordinator Amr Ali, are currently serving three-year prison sentences for contravening the country's controversial protest law, which bans all but police-sanctioned protests. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/217063.aspx
