Art Alert: A week for Beethoven aficionados in Cairo, Alexandria Egypt's classical music world will witness concerts in Cairo and Alexandria featuring works by Beethoven
Symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven will be on the programme of two Egyptian orchestras: the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Orchestra. Both events, on 10 and 17 October respectively, mark a special occasion for the institutions holding them. On 10 October, the Cairo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andreas Spörri will commemorate the Cairo Opera House's Anniversary with a programme that includes Beethoven's Choir Fantasy, Op. 80 followed by Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 (The Choral). Soloists of the evening are: pianist Sarah Ayoub, sopranos Iman Moustafa and Mona Rafla, alto Jolie Faizy, tenors Walid Korayem and Amr Medhat, and bass Ashraf Seweilam. The concert will be joined by the A Cappella Choir with choir master Maya Gvineria. On 17 October, in Alexandria, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Orchestra conducted by Hisham Gabr will give its first concert after the formation's expansion. The orchestra was strengthened by the addition of 10 permanent wind and percussion players. The concert will include Symphony No. 8 in F Major Op. 93 as well as Rossini's Overture to La Scala Di Seta and Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in D Major. The concert will also include violin soloist Ahmed Tarek.
