Ahly sack coach Mabrouk after trophy-less season: reports Fathi Mabrouk was appointed as the club's coach in May after Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido was sacked after a poor run
Egyptian club Ahly have already decided to sack coach Fathi Mabrouk and his assistants following a trophy-less season and will announce it officially after the board's meeting this afternoon. The Cairo-based club failed to qualify for the African Confederation Cup losing 4-3 to South Africa's Orlando Pirates Sunday, 5-3 on aggregate. Under the helms of the 64-year-old tactician, the Reds didn't win any major championship this season- the first time since 2004. They lost both the Egyptian Premier League and the Egypt Cup to archrivals Zamalek who were also eliminated from the Confederation Cup semis by Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel- losing 5-4 on aggregate. The Monday afternoon meeting is also expected to reveal Mabrouk's successor with many reports suggesting foreign names including Portuguese Jose Peseiro. The club's Youth Football Sector manager Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Shafi is likely to be named as the team's caretaker coach until the successor arrives. Ahly will kick-off the new season mid-October against Zamalek in the Super Cup clash. Mabrouk started his current spell for Ahly as a caretaker coach in May succeeding Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido after a poor run. More updates to follow.
