Prosecutor-General approves Salem file The Prosecutor-General has approved a case that includes evidence against Egyptian business tycoon Hussein Salem
Prosecutor-General Abdel-Megeed Mahmoud has approved the case filed against the fugitive business tycoon Hussein Salem. The Egyptian foreign ministry will now send the file to the Spanish authorities. According to Adel Saeed, assistant to the prosecutor-general, the file contains comprehensive copies of the investigation conducted by the prosecution on the crimes Salem is accused of as well as the evidence, the order of detainment, documents relating to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and articles in Egypt's penal code to be used in his trial. The file also includes a copy of the Egyptian passport he used during his travels between 2005 and 2011, to prove that Salem kept his Egyptian citizenship after he obtained Spanish citizenship even though Spain prohibits dual nationality. Salem, a confidante of ousted president Mubarak, has been on the run since February 3; he was arrested in his villa in Majorca, Spain, last Wednesday. Salem is expected to stand trial on charges of corruption and money laundering.
