The Department of English and Comparative Literature at the American University in Cairo will host Josph Masaad, Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University, on Tuesday, 28 April, at 6:00pm who will hold a lecture entitled "Islam and the choice of liberalism." Joseph Massad teaches and writes about modern Arab politics and intellectual history. According to his biography on the website of the school Middle Eastern, South Asian, African Studies at Columbia University,he is interested in theories of identity and culture – including theories of nationalism, sexuality, race and religion. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1998. He is the author ofDesiring Arabs(2007), which was awarded the Lionel Trilling Book Award;The Persistence of the Palestinian Question: Essays on Zionism and the Palestinian Question(2006); andColonial Effects: The Making of National Identity in Jordan(2001). His bookDaymumat al-Mas'alah al-Filastiniyyahwas published by Dar Al-Adab in 2009, andLa Persistance de la question Palestiniennewas published by La Fabrique in 2009. The Arabic translation ofDesiring Arabswas published in 2013 by Dar Al-Shorouk Press in Cairo under the titleIshtiha' Al-‘Arab. The lecture will be held at the Oriental Hall at the AUC Tahrir campus.
