Art Alert: Celebrating C.P.E. Bach with the Cairo Symphony Chamber Orchestra
First concert in series for Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's 300th anniversary on Saturday, 22 November at Cairo Opera House
Published in Ahram Online on 20 - 11 - 2014

"He is the father, we are the children," Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) commented on works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 – 1788), often referred to simply as C.P.E. Bach.
Paralleling world celebrations of C.P.E. Bach's 300th birth anniversary, the Cairo Symphony Chamber Orchestra will launch a series of concerts with works by the composer.
The first in the series will take place on Saturday, 22 November and will include three compositions by C.P.E. Bach: Symphony No.1 in D major, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D Minor with Peter Olach as soloist.
The second half of the evening will include Magnificat, a composition for voices and orchestra. The soloists will be soprano Iman Mostafa, alto Amina Khairat, tenor Hisham El-Gindy and baritone Raouf Zaidan.
The concert will be joined by A Cappella choir, with choir master Maya Gvineria.
The Cairo Symphony Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nader Abbassi is a newly formed ensemble consisting of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra's musicians. As a smaller formation, the chamber orchestra will give several concerts during this season, including compositions by C.P.E. Bach.
The son of the well known Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach is also one of the most important German composers, representing a transition between the baroque music period epitomised by his father and the classical period following it.
Throughout 2014, he has been celebrated across the world, particularly in German cities where the composer spent most of his life: principally in Berlin and Hamburg, but also Potsdam, Frankfurt (Oder), Leipzig and Weimar.
With the series dedicated to CP.E. Bach, Egyptian audiences have a great opportunity to listen to captivating compositions by this unique classical music prodigy.
Programme:
Saturday, 22 November, 8pm
Cairo Opera House, main hall
