Egypt's Zamalek names Portuguese Pacheco as new coach
Former Boavista, Mallorca and China's Beijing Guoan coach Pacheco will be in charge of Egypt's Zamalek, replacing axed tactician Hossam Hassan
Published in Ahram Online on 12 - 10 - 2014

Zamalek officially announced Sunday that Portuguese coach Jaime Pacheco signed a one-year contract with the team with an option to be extended for a monthly salary of $48,000, replacing axed coach Hossam Hassan.
The 56-year-old Pacheco was among a handful of foreign coaches on a Zamalek shortlist as the struggling outfit sought to replace Egypt's all-time leading scorer, Hassan, following a disappointing start to the season.
Zamalek terminated the contract with Hassan after just six matches into the season for one of Egypt and Africa's most successful sides.
The Cairo giants, who signed more than a dozen players in the close of season, to bolster an underachieving squad, thumped Talae El-Geish 6-1 in their opening Premier League game, but had to settle for two 0-0 draws with Dakhleya and Ittihad El-Shorta after wasting a host of goal-scoring chances in both games.
Pacheco was in charge of Portuguese side Boavista leading them to win the Portuguese League title in 2001, as well as reaching the European Champions League group stage and qualifying for the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2003.
He also won the Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Cup with Saudi Arabia's Al-Shabab in 2009 before leaving to China and taking the charge of Beijing Guoan for his last stint before being signed by Zamalek.
The Portuguese coach had spells with Spain's Mallorca and Pacos Ferreira, Rio Ave, Uniao Lamas, Vitoria Guimaraes and Belenenses in Portugal.
The White Nights are bidding to win their first Egyptian Premier League title since 2004.
