Liberal, leftist groups meet to coordinate call for election law changes

Liberal and leftist groups have met to coordinate their demand for more parliamentary seats to be decided via party lists, Khaled Dawoud, spokesperson for the Constitution Party, said in a press statement on Wednesday.
The other groups include the Egyptian Popular Current, the Nasserist Karama Party, the Socialist Popular Alliance Party, Masr El-Horreya, the Justice Party and the Bread and Freedom Party.
The new House of Representatives election law specifies 80 percent of seats will be elected through the individual candidacy system.
Many parties support having more seats elected via party lists, arguing it would offer more representational justice and strengthen the power of parties.
The groups presented a memo to President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi last week with suggestions on amendments to the law.
Dawoud said the Constitution Party would coordinate with other parties, such as the Free Egyptians Party and Egyptian Social Democratic Party, to push for changes to the election law.
The party has not yet joined an electoral alliance, he added.
Procedures for the vote must begin before 18 July, according to Egypt's 2014 constitution.
